About this curriculum

Located in the vibrant city of Plymouth in the South West of England, Widey Court Primary School recognizes the unique advantages its geographical position affords when it comes to cultural and linguistic exposure. Our proximity to France, both in terms of geography and historic ties, has been a crucial factor in our decision to adopt French as the primary Modern Foreign Language (MFL) taught at our school. Through our close connections with France, we're able to offer a rich, immersive experience that goes beyond textbook learning, incorporating cultural exchanges, interactive sessions, and even field trips when possible.

Intent

Widey Court is situated in the city of Plymouth in the South West of England. Our location has influenced the decision to choose French as the MFL taught, as we have close links with this country. Learning a foreign language is a gateway to wider horizons and aspirations for our pupils. It provides an opening to other cultures and should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.  Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Implementation

French follows the National Curriculum Languages  Programme of study for KS2. At Widey, French is taught weekly in each KS2 classroom. We subscribe to “Language Angels” which delivers the key  objectives from the National Curriculum in an engaging and progressive way. Units are chosen by year groups and through these topics the key skills of speaking, reading and writing in French are delivered. The curriculum builds on prior knowledge and provides clear progress through the program of study. We welcome visitors from European countries– all of which works to enrich their experience of MFL.

Impact

Through lesson observations and children interviews, children will be able to demonstrate their increasing knowledge of the language. The focus of the teaching will be on practical communication, with an emphasis on spoken language with elements of written work to demonstrate understanding of grammar, phonics and vocabulary. This will form a strong foundation for further language study at KS 3.

On Friday 17th October, we will be taking part in Wear Red Day to support Show Racism the Red Card. Children are invited to come to school in non-uniform with a red theme to show their support for this important cause. This year, the importance of Wear Red Day feels especially significant, as recent events and increased news coverage have highlighted the continuing need to stand together against racism and promote equality, respect, and understanding within our communities.
